Patience, Pedagogy, Positivity and Passion are 4 important characteristics for defining a great piano teacher. This list is by no means comprehensive; it is my opinion.

  1. They have the virtue of Patience. Learning music is like learning a new language. There are hundreds of different symbols and details that must be interpreted. All of that in addition to body coordination! Having a patient teacher is paramount to an enjoyable experience. The patient holding of space for a student to discover and learn at their unique pace is one of four important traits of any great piano teacher.
  2. They have pedagogy training. A pedagogy degree means that the teacher has specifically studied and applied the skill and art of teaching piano. Just because a musician has an impressive performance history does not mean they have the skill and art of conveying their knowledge to different ages, stages and abilities.
  3. They are positive and encouraging. A great teacher will set up a student for mini successes all through each lesson and encourage them while they strive to learn something new.
  4. They are passionate and excited about teaching and music in general. Energy is contagious! If the teacher is excited about the repertoire and creating music, it will most likely inspire the student to do their best! I know when someone is very passionate about a topic, I can’t help but fall in love with the subject matter regardless of my previous interest! Passion is powerful.

Piano lessons with a mindful twist blend time and science-tested mindfulness techniques into the lesson. This might include a quick “body scan” to release tension/pain or a short breathing exercise to calm nerves before a performance. What I love most about incorporating mindfulness into my piano lessons is that these techniques can be used in any area of life, helping my students overall.

Yes! A full digital keyboard with 88 weighted keys OR an upright OR grand piano are the most optimal instruments for beginning learners. The full-size keyboard with 88 weighted keys is the most popular instrument to start on. I’ve had success finding these used but in good condition on Facebook Marketplace or even Craigslist for $100 or less.

Here is the pricing breakdown:
